Registering a birth or a death with the Indian authorities used to mean paperwork and trips to Engomi. Now part of that process has moved online. The High Commission of India in Nicosia has started using E-Sewa, the Indian Consular Services System, a web portal for consular applications.

It's part of the wider Digital India push to make government services simpler and faster for citizens, including those living abroad.

What you can do on E-Sewa

For now, the portal covers two services:

  • Registration of birth, for example for a baby born to Indian parents in Cyprus
  • Registration of death, when an Indian national passes away in Cyprus

More services may be added later, so it's worth bookmarking the portal: indianconsularservices.mea.gov.in.

What this means for you

  • Get your documents ready first. Cyprus-issued certificates, such as a birth or marriage certificate, now need an Apostille before the High Commission will accept them. Certificates that aren't in English also need a certified English translation.
  • Read the guidelines. The High Commission has published step-by-step guidelines (PDF) for birth and death registration.
  • Use correct details. Enter names and dates exactly as they appear on official documents, to avoid delays or rejected applications.
  • Ask if unsure. The consular section answers queries at cons.nicosia@mea.gov.in.

For new parents especially, registering your baby's birth early makes later steps, like applying for an Indian passport, much smoother.
