Bringing Your Parents From India to Cyprus? The Visitor Visa Explained

Few things make a home in Cyprus feel complete like having Mummy and Papa visit, whether it is to meet a new grandchild, spend the winter in the sun or simply see how you live. Before anyone books a flight, though, there is the visa to sort out. Here is how it works for parents and other relatives travelling on Indian passports.
Do they need a visa?
In most cases, yes: Indian passport holders need a short-stay visa to visit Cyprus. There is one useful exception. Anyone holding a valid Schengen visa that allows two or more entries, or a national visa or residence permit from a Schengen country, can enter Cyprus without a separate Cypriot visa and stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Remember that Cyprus is in the EU but not yet a full member of the Schengen area. A Cypriot visa is valid for Cyprus only, so if your parents also want to see Greece, Italy or anywhere else in Schengen on the same trip, it is worth applying for a multiple-entry Schengen visa instead.
Where and when to apply
- Who handles it: the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in New Delhi. Since 21 July 2026, under a contract initially signed for six months, it has also used VFS Global to collect applications, with centres in 19 Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Ahmedabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Kolkata and Lucknow. Appointments are booked through VFS Global's Cyprus page.
- Applying at the High Commission itself: by appointment only, booked by email at delhi.consulate@mfa.gov.cy. Expect to give fingerprints and have a picture taken at the appointment.
- Timing: an application can go in up to six months before the trip and must be in at least 15 days before. A decision usually takes about 15 days, but it can stretch to 45 if the consulate needs more checks or documents.
What it costs
- The visa fee is €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 12, and free for children under 6.
- VFS adds a service charge of €2.60 plus GST. Extras such as courier return of the passport, SMS updates or a premium lounge are optional and cost more.
The documents your parents will need
- A recent photo with a light background.
- A passport with two or more empty pages, valid for at least three months beyond the end of the visa and no more than 10 years old.
- Travel medical insurance covering the whole trip, with at least €30,000 of cover for emergency treatment and repatriation.
- Proof they can pay for the trip, such as six months of bank statements, or a declaration of support from you as their host if they cannot show enough funds themselves.
- Proof of their work, studies or residence situation back home, plus a flight reservation and proof of where they will stay.
- A translation of any document that is not in English or Greek.
The High Commission can ask for extra paperwork, and even a perfect file is no promise of approval.
Once they arrive
- A short-stay visa allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and the purpose of the trip cannot be changed after arrival.
- An extension is possible only in limited cases, through the Department of Migration: free of charge for force majeure or humanitarian reasons, or for a €30 fee where there are serious personal reasons.
- If your child is a Cypriot citizen, note that family members of Cypriot nationals still need a visa in every case, and must also show travel health insurance.
What this means for you
- Start early: the rules allow up to six months, so there is no need to leave it to the 15-day minimum. Applying a month or two ahead leaves time for any extra documents the consulate asks for.
- Write a clear invitation: if you are covering their costs or hosting them, a signed declaration of support with your address, your Cyprus residence details and the dates of the visit makes the application easier to assess. Keep the dates the same across every document.
- Do not skimp on insurance: medical bills abroad can be high, especially for older travellers, so choose a policy that comfortably exceeds the €30,000 minimum and tell the insurer about any existing health conditions.
- Check the holidays: the High Commission in Delhi closes on Indian and Cypriot public holidays, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
- Planning a European tour too? Compare a multiple-entry Schengen visa, which would also let them enter Cyprus, with a Cyprus-only visa before you apply.
