Studying at a Cyprus university guide: check before you pay, accredited by CYQAA, in the Republic of Cyprus, enter via Larnaca or Paphos, student permit and funds, NMC rules for medicine, and work rules for students

Cyprus attracts a growing number of Indian students: English-taught courses, an EU degree, a safe, sunny island and costs that can be lower than in the UK or US. But every year some students arrive to find their university isn't recognised, their agent has vanished, or their visa isn't valid. A few checks before you pay a deposit can save years and lakhs of rupees.

Know which Cyprus you're choosing

This is the single most important point. Since 1974, the north of the island has been under Turkish military occupation, and the self-declared administration there is recognised only by Turkey. More than 20 universities operate in the north and recruit heavily in India, often through agents who simply say "Cyprus".

  • Universities in the north are not recognised by the Republic of Cyprus, which is the EU member state. Their degrees may not be accepted in the EU or elsewhere.
  • Entering through the north, for example via Ercan airport, is treated as illegal entry by the Republic of Cyprus.
  • The Government of India has advised students to check institutions carefully after Indian students reported malpractice at some universities in the north, and noted that the High Commission in Nicosia can't easily help students there.

So ask your agent directly: is the university in the Republic of Cyprus, accredited by its authorities, and will I fly into Larnaca or Paphos? If the answer is vague, walk away.

Universities in the Republic of Cyprus

Public: the University of Cyprus (Nicosia), the Cyprus University of Technology (Limassol) and the Open University of Cyprus. These teach mostly in Greek, though some courses, especially at master's level, are in English.

Private: including the University of Nicosia, European University Cyprus, Frederick University, Neapolis University Pafos, the University of Central Lancashire Cyprus (UCLan Cyprus), the University of Limassol and Philips University. Most teach in English.

Every university and programme must be accredited by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA). Check that both the university and your specific course are accredited before you apply.

Planning to study medicine?

If you want to practise in India later, your foreign degree must meet the National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021. In short, the course must be taught in English and last at least 54 months, followed by a 12-month internship at the same institution in the same country; back in India you'll also need to pass the licensing exam and complete a further supervised internship. Ask the university in writing how its programme meets these rules before you enrol.

Visa, permit and money

  • Student permit: you'll need a letter of acceptance, proof you can pay fees and living costs, health insurance and a clean criminal record. Permits are usually renewed every year while you study full-time.
  • Working while you study: non-EU students may work only in the jobs and sectors set by a Labour Ministry decree, from their second semester, for up to 20 hours a week during term and 38 hours a week when classes stop. The employment contract must first be approved by a District Labour Office. Don't count on part-time work to pay your fees.
  • After you graduate: graduates with a master's degree or higher can apply for a permit of up to 12 months to look for a job or set up a business at the level of their studies. Others, and anyone who wants to stay longer, usually need an employer to sponsor a work permit.

What this means for you

  • Verify, then pay: confirm the university's location and CYQAA accreditation yourself, not just through your agent.
  • Get everything in writing: fees, refund policy, accommodation and what's included.
  • Budget honestly: rents in Nicosia and Limassol have risen in recent years, so plan for living costs as well as fees.
  • Register with the High Commission on the MADAD portal when you arrive, and connect with the Indian community; seniors are the best source of honest advice.
