Picture it: a summer night, the sea just a few steps away, and music drifting over the walls of a medieval fort. That was the setting for 'Songs Alongside the Sea', a free concert at Larnaka Castle on Wednesday 29 July that celebrated the friendship between India and Cyprus.
The evening was a joint effort by the High Commission of India in Nicosia, Cyprus's Department of Antiquities and the Deputy Ministry of Culture.
The music
The star of the night was Cypriot singer-songwriter Vakia Stavrou, who sang in several languages, with Manolis Neophytou accompanying her on piano. Rather than a single style, the concert travelled across cultures, which suited an evening dedicated to two countries.
The venue
Larnaka Castle stands at the southern end of the Finikoudes seafront, where it once guarded the town's harbour. Today it houses a small museum, and in summer its courtyard becomes one of the most atmospheric open-air stages on the island.
What this means for you
Cultural evenings like this one are often free and open to all, and they're a lovely way to enjoy Cyprus with family while seeing India celebrated alongside it. Some ideas for next time:
- Make an evening of it: walk along Finikoudes, get dinner by the sea, and arrive early for a good seat.
- Bring Cypriot friends or colleagues. Joint India–Cyprus events are a natural way to share your culture.
- Follow the High Commission of India on Instagram and check our Events page for upcoming concerts.
