While world leaders gathered in New York for the 81st UN General Assembly in September, India and Cyprus found time for a conversation of their own. India's top diplomat, Dr S. Jaishankar, and his Cypriot counterpart, Dr Constantinos Kombos, met for talks away from the main hall.
What was on the table
- Bilateral ties and the EU: the two ministers looked at how cooperation between their countries is moving forward, and at India's wider relationship with the European Union, where Cyprus is a member and an important voice.
- The region: they compared notes on current regional challenges.
- Occupied territory: Dr Jaishankar said both sides restated their firm opposition to the illegal occupation of territory, a principle that matters deeply to India and to Cyprus.
- The law of the sea: both backed UNCLOS, the UN treaty that governs the world's oceans, which Dr Jaishankar called “the Constitution of the seas”.
- A wider partnership: for Cyprus, Dr Kombos stressed how far the Strategic Partnership now reaches, from trade, ships and ports to security, defence and digital technology.
Why it matters to Indians in Cyprus
Meetings like this can feel far away from daily life in Limassol or Nicosia, but the topics land close to home. Shipping is one of the biggest employers of Indian professionals on the island. Better connectivity could, over time, mean easier travel and more business between the two countries. And a closer relationship with an EU member gives India, and Indians living in Europe, a friendly partner inside the Union.
It also shows a steady rhythm: PM Modi's visit to Cyprus, the Cypriot President's state visit to India, and now talks in New York. When leaders keep meeting this often, practical agreements tend to follow.
